Travel
At 19, I announced to my parents that I would not be going back to university the next semester. I’d been inspired to venture through West Africa, Morocco and Europe. Though I did return to university, my lifelong fascination with exotic cultures and landscapes, flora and fauna, began back in 1983 and took me backpacking to many destinations:
West Africa: Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Senegal (1983)
Southeast Asia: Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia (1989)
Nepal (1989)
East Africa: Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zanzibar (1990)
Japan, S. Korea, China (1993-94); I taught English in Japan for 1 year
Central America and Mexico: Guatemala, Belize, Yucatan, Chiapas (2000 – 2001); I was a postdoc in the Yucatan for 1 year
Iceland (2011)
